    Mammalian vocalizations, including human speech, contain rhythmically timed components. This suggests that the tempo of vocalization sounds is innately encoded, but the underlying mechanisms are not clear. Now, Wei et al. describe a brainstem node that is essential for rhythmic crying in neonatal mice.
